On 22 December 2001 it all began in Choum where we boarded 'le Train du Désert', the Desert Train, hired from the Somasert
travel agency which is owned by the SNIM. SNIM is the mining company which exploits three mines in Northeast Mauritania and uses its 700
kilometers long railway to transport the minerals to the harbour city of Nouadhibou before the minerals are being loaded into ships which sail all over the world.
1961 built SNIM Alsthom CC 04 will provide us traction from Choum to Zouérate, one of the mining towns.
